General Hardwood Floor FAQS

General FAQS to help you select your new wood floors.

There are no trade-offs in choosing between our solid and engineered wood floors. Each floor is hand-crafted and made to order using premium wood, so they look equally beautiful no matter which type you choose.

Barwood wide plank hardwood floors are available in both ¾” solid and ¾” engineered construction, both with a 4 mm wear layer, and our refinishing warranty guarantees at least three sandings over the life of your floor. The same wood will be used to make your floor whether you choose solid or engineered, so they will be virtually indistinguishable from each other once installed.

Hardwood flooring has long been the top choice for homebuyers and remains so today. According to Realtor.com, installing new hardwood floors may increase a home’s value by as much as 2.5%,[1] though some realtors place that figure at 6 to 10% or more.[2] Luxury wood flooring may add more value, and luxury vinyl planks and tile are also highly sought after in today’s market.

Luxury wood flooring is a hardwood floor that is made with finer materials, greater care and a strong emphasis on design. Wide plank flooring, reclaimed flooring and distressed flooring are excellent examples of luxury wood flooring.

Hardwood continues to be the most popular flooring in homes today. While luxury vinyl plank, natural stone, tile and concrete are all increasingly popular, more homeowners prefer hardwood floors.

Polyurethane is the most popular finish for hardwood floors. A polyurethane finish is highly resistant to scratches, scuffs, stains and water damage. With a clear finish and a fast drying time, water-based polyurethane is a more eco-friendly but costlier choice than oil-based polyurethane. Oil-based finishes have higher levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) – gases that can be harmful to health and the environment. Oil-based polyurethane takes longer to dry and has a rich amber tint that many homeowners prefer. It also roughly half the cost of a water-based finish.

Barwood hardwood floors are suitable for residential or commercial projects. They can be installed at, above, or below grade; in any room including kitchens and bathrooms; on radiant heat, concrete slab or plywood, and in a variety of environments.
